ASME SB677 TP904L Nickel Alloy Pipe for Industrial Application
ASME SB677 is a material standard in Section II, Part B of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, titled "Nickel Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tubing." It specifies the chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, and other requirements for seamless pipe made from nickel and nickel-cobalt alloys. TP904L designates a specific type of high-performance austenitic stainless steel, often referred to as "super austenitic stainless steel." However, due to its high nickel content (approximately 25%), its performance is closer to that of nickel-base alloys, particularly in terms of corrosion resistance. Therefore, in commercial and industrial classifications, it is often referred to as a nickel-base alloy.
The chemical composition of 904L is C ≤ 0.03, Si ≤ 1.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, P ≤ 0.035, S ≤ 0.03, Ni: 23.0-25.0, Cr: 18.0-20.0, Mo: 3.0-4.0, Cu: 4.0-5.0. The minimum mechanical properties of 904L alloy at room temperature: alloy and state: 926, tensile strength (Rm N/mm2): 490, yield strength (RP0.2N/mm2): 216, elongation A5%: 35
ASME SB677 TP904L Nickel Alloy Pipe Composition Range
| Grade | C | Mn | Si | P | S | Cr | Mo | Ni | Cu |
| 904L | 0.020 | 2.00 | 1.00 | 0.045 | 0.035 | 19.0-23.0 | 4.0-5.0 | 23.0-28.0 | 1.0-2.0 |
High nickel can provide a stable austenitic structure, giving the alloy excellent toughness and resistance to reducing media and stress corrosion cracking; high chromium provides excellent resistance to corrosion in oxidizing media; molybdenum can significantly improve resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion; copper is the key element, which makes 904L have excellent corrosion resistance to reducing acids such as sulfuric acid.
